Aruba without a car: plan the whole journey

You do not have to make one transport choice for an entire Aruba holiday. A walkable day near your accommodation, a bus trip along an operating route and a taxi for a particular connection can coexist. Start with the places you genuinely want to reach. Then compare the complete outward and return journey, including walking, luggage, transfers and the time you need to be back.
Separate three types of day
List a near-base day, a town visit and a more dispersed exploration day. They create different demands. Walking may solve the first, while an actual bus route can help with the second. The third may justify a rental or a directly arranged driver. This is a planning framework, not a claim that every beach, attraction or hotel is served by public transport. Aruba Tourism Authority identifies buses, taxis, shuttles and rentals as options; suitability depends on the journey.

Read the operator map, not a generic route summary
Arubus publishes current maps and schedules for individual routes. Its route list includes links between Oranjestad and San Nicolas, northern services and a San Nicolas–Baby Beach service. Open the relevant route in the direction you will use and check the day of travel. Identify both boarding and return stops. An island map showing nearby roads does not establish that a bus stops at the entrance you need or runs at the time you intend.
Compare door-to-door effort
For each option, write the walk to boarding, possible waiting, transfers, the final walk and the reverse journey. Families should include carrying bags and managing tired children; travellers with mobility needs should ask about the actual assigned vehicle and stops. A short distance on a map may still mean heat exposure or an unsuitable walking connection. Do not let a cheap headline fare hide a difficult final leg. Check current fares and accepted payment with the operator; we do not maintain a live fare table.
Use taxis for defined gaps
A taxi is most useful in a plan when you know the pickup point, destination, passenger and luggage needs, and how the return will work. Confirm the current charge and any applicable conditions directly before travelling. Keep the provider details available offline. Do not assume an app, instant availability, a particular accessible vehicle or card payment unless confirmed. For an evening out, arrange a realistic way back rather than relying on the same transport pattern as daytime.
Rent selectively, with the contract in mind
If a rental day makes sense, compare the complete agreement: insurance, excess, deposit, permitted drivers, fuel, parking and road restrictions. Do not assume that a vehicle category permits every track or park route. Photograph its condition with the provider at collection and understand return instructions. A rental is not automatically the lowest-effort choice when the rest of the group wants a beach day close to the accommodation. Choose it for a clear task, not simply because it appears in a holiday checklist.
Keep a return-first rule
Save the return details before setting out. Record the last acceptable connection for your own plans, not merely the last published departure. Leave a fallback and enough flexibility to abandon an optional stop. For a southern outing, read our San Nicolas planning guide; for choosing a convenient base, start with areas and communities.
